in the licensed area of Moscow (the city of Moscow and Moscow region), another 10,6 million — in the licensed area of St. Petersburg (the city of St. Petersburg and Leningrad region).

Russian Federation has 86 federal subjects of different types (republics, oblasts, krais, autonomous oblasts, autonomous okrugs, federal cities). All federal subjects are united into 7 federal districts.
The Central Federal District has the highest population density (60 people per square km). The Far Eastern Federal District is the biggest in the surface area, but the population density is only 1.14 people per square km. Far East covers about 1/3 of Russian territory but has only about 3,5% of Russian population.

SIM-cards gross sales is one of the key-elements of russian mobile operators’ marketing strategy. To them this is one of the ways to draw away their competitors’ subscribers. During 2008 in Russia more than 60 million SIM-cards (mobile communications services contracts) were sold. Independent resellers distributing contracts get remunirated for every subscriber they achieve to add to their overall number.

During 2008 in Russia more than 36 million mobile phones were sold, nearly 20% of them were purchased on credit. Buying on credit decreased in comparison to 2007 figures.

Since 2005 Nokia has taken the lead at the Russian mobile market in its user equipment segment. In 2008 the finish vendor managed to increase its market’s share up to 40%. By the end of 2008 the company opened 35 sales outlets of its own. Motorola’s market share in 2008 diminished from 10% to 3%, SonyEricsson also suffered some considerable loss in the market’s share terms.

In 2009 we are expecting the contraction of russian market of mobile phones in terms of money as well as quantitative terms. According to our estimations in dollars the market’s sales volume will drop by more than 30%. As we see it, the customers will prefer more available models.

Quantitatively the market will decrease by 25% approximatively. Such a considerable decline of sales will affect the independent retailers so the number of them will have to think about simple survival first and foremost.
