VimpelCom becomes "the first entertaining"

PDFPrintE-mail

From 2012 VimpelCom CEO Elena Shmatova goes to work at the Dutch headquarters of the operator –"Vimpelcom Ltd."Her post could be taken by Anton Kudryashov, CEO of "CTC Media", co-owned until recently by "Alfa Group" (controls 25% of VimpelCom). VimpelCom has to recover its market share. But Mr. Kudryashov has no such experience: under his leadership, "CTC Media" loses the audience.

Elena Shmatova is moving on to "Vimpelcom Ltd.", which owns 100% of the Russian VimpelCom. "Elena is a strong professional, I asked her to join the team's headquarters in Amsterdam" – passed his message through the press service VimpelCom CEO Jo Lunder. At the same time, he said, Mrs. Shmatova will continue to lead the Russian VimpelCom up to the moment when a decision is taken on her successor. Elena Shmatova confirmed that she is considering joining the headquarters "early in next year". Her new there has not been yet specified.

For VimpelCom it is the third shift of management since the spring of 2009 when the company has been left by Alexander Izosimov, who served as its CEO for more than five years. His powers were divided between two managers at once - the former CEO of the company "Rosgosstrakh-Life" Alexander Torbahov and former head of "Telekom Austria" a Boris Nemsic. However, in June 2010 a contract with them was prematurely terminated, and the new CEO became Elena Shmatova, formerly in charge of finance department.

As the main reasons for changing company's management analysts called loss of market share in subscribers in Russia. In the spring of 2010the operator stepped down as second largest mobile communications operator by number of subscribers in Russia, and by the autumn of that year did so in terms of the revenue from the mobile business.

The idea of changing VimpelCom» CEO to Kudryashov belongs to the "Alfa Group", according to sources close to the company and its supervisory board. Kudryashov headed "CTC Media" when it was controlled by "Alfa" and was remembered by its owners as a manager who is able to effectively reduce costs, explains one of the interlocutors of "Vedomosti".

A little more than a year during which Mrs. Shmatova headed Russian VimpelCom, the company was unable to restore its position neither in terms of subscribers number, nor in terms of revenue. However, as recently claimed Jo Lunder, headquarters of VimpelCom were satisfied with the work of Elena Shmatova, "as the negative trend of the last year is changing and subscribers base and revenue grow at a good pace".

The main contender for the post of VimpelCom CEO is Anton Kudryashov, says a source close to company's shareholders. Mr. Kudryashov is now CEO of the holding "CTC Media", which controls TV-channels CTC, "Home" and "Pepper." From 2003 to June 2011 among the major shareholders of the holding was "Alfa Group". Mr. Kudryashov, who led the "CTC Media" in August 2008, was just a creature of Petr Aven, a member of the Supervisory Board of "Alfa-group". Yesterday, Mr. Kudryashov said he did not intend to change jobs. The press service of "CTC Media" declined to comment.

A source close to the holding company said that leaving the "CTC Media" is not in the interest of Mr. Kudryashov, in that case he will lose a significant part of options due to him. As follows from the employment contract signed in June 2008 between the "CTC Media" and Anton Kudryashov, the CEO has been bound to receive more than 3 million shares, of which at least 1.18 million can be sold in 2012-2014.

Mr. Kudryashov was able to execute the tasks indicated by the Board of Directors only in the crisis year of 2009, state holding's data. In 2010 the CEO and his team have not been able to increase main indicators to pre-negotiated rates. Average daily audience of CTC and DTV channels dropped. As a result, Anton Kudryashov, got only 70% of the bonus due to him of $450 thousand (it equals to 60% of his annual salary).
